When Should You Consider an Amended Tax Return?

A refund will be initiated by filing an amended tax return if an error or omission is discovered on a previously filed tax return. A return is most often amended in these specific situations:

  • Error with Filing Status: When people originally chose the incorrect filing status like filing “Single” when they qualified for “Head of Household.”
  • Undeclared Income: Failing to declare an income source (eg. freelance income, rental income etc.) and forgetting about it.
  • Overlooked Credits or Deductions: Where deductions or credits that could reduce the tax liability such as educational credits or charitable contributions were missed.
  • Misleading Information: Entering false information such as a typo in a Social Security number or playing a name.

Our Amended Tax Return Services

Filing an amended tax return comes with additional responsibilities — and time investment — even when the ramifications and the rules are well understood. At Wasserman CPA, we have decades of experience assisting residents of South Jersey and surrounding areas amend their tax returns in the quickest and most accurate manner possible. We offer amended return services as mentioned below:

  • Error Identification: Checking your prior filed return about the mistakes you have been making or putting in deductions or credits that you missed
  • Form 1040-X Filing: Preparing and filing form 1040-X. It is used to amend the federal income tax return.
  • IRS Communications: Being a representative on your behalf for communications with the IRS if necessary. We take the headache out of fielding inquiries on your own.
  • State Amendments: In addition to federal amendments we also help with any required correction at the state level to ensure your records are consistent.

Common Mistakes that Lead to Amended Returns

It’s common to file an amended return — people shoot themselves in the foot when they’re in a hurry or don’t know about recent changes to tax law. Some common errors that would require an amended return:

  • Overlooked Deductions and Credits: It’s easy to overlook valuable deductions, such as educational or energy-efficient home improvement costs.
  • Math Errors: The IRS typically will find basic math errors. But it would be the failure of the more complex calculations that would have a bigger effect.
  • Incorrect Income Reporting: Often this is because people forget to report income from freelancing or gig work. This kind of income may not be accompanied by a standard W-2.
  • Incorrect Filing Status: Taxpayers are sometimes confused about their filing status; they may select the wrong one. This simple mistake can have a radical impact on their taxes!

5 Simplified Steps of Amended Tax Returns

A few stages of the expert amendment measure are composed as follows:

  1. Gathering All Relevant Documentation: The original tax return, as well as any records showing the corrected or additional information, should be obtained.
  2. Filing Form 1040-X: This is your official federal return amendment form. Corrections should be noted fully and accurately.
  3. Attach supporting documents: If you claim new deductions or credits, attach all relevant forms or schedules to Form 1040-X.
  4. State Amendments: Amendments are prepared for both your federal and state returns, if applicable.
  5. Processing: It can take the IRS up to 16 weeks to process an amended return. We communicate with clients — issuing updates and managing related correspondence.

Practical Tips for Amended Tax Returns

  • Keep Good Records: With clear and organized tax records — W-2s, 1099s, receipts and any correspondence with the IRS — amending a return is easier.
  • Use Professional Help: If you’re living in a multi-year return that needs amending, it can be very difficult for some people to navigate a return without assistance.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • How long do I have to file an amended return?
  • Will amending my return increase my risk of an audit?
  • Can I e-file an amended return?
How long do I have to file an amended return?

In general, you must file within three years of the due date of the original return you submitted, or two years from the date the tax was paid, whichever time period is longer. This window is especially important to act within, so that you can obtain refunds or not face penalties.

Will amending my return increase my risk of an audit?

Not necessarily. Although amended returns might receive extra scrutiny, filing accurate information and submitting all supporting documents provide a better chance of avoiding issues.

Can I e-file an amended return?

Yes, due to recent changes by the IRS, tax years 2019 and later amends can be e-filed. But older returns will have to be mailed in. We can walk you through both of those processes.
